Christian and his team have been hard at work marking hundreds of scalloper locations out on the water and interviewing almost 200 groups of scallopers back at the boat ramps since the season opening on June 25th to assess the effects of recreational bay scallop fishery on sea turtles. Work continues for a little bit longer looking at patterns of use outside of the scallop season and finishing up habitat and turtle work. More in depth analyses of all of the data collected this year will be conducted this winter to explore how scallopers affect marine turtle movements. Graduate students Natalie Montero and Anthony Gillis have been busy teaching 4th graders from Franklin County Schools about sea turtle ecology, biology and conservation. Both, Natalie and Anthony, were surprised and thoroughly impressed by the student’s previous knowledge of turtles! Regardless of their previous knowledge, the students couldn’t even begin to guess that they would get first hand experience “working up” a turtle. Anthony and Natalie took a stuffed sea turtle along with morphometric and tagging supplies and guided the students to gather measurements and take samples of turtles. To finish each session, the students learned and practiced the most vital of techniques, holding a turtle!

News from the field: exploring the distribution and habitat use of juvenile green turtles in the Paraná coast, Brazil.
Another successful expedition to investigate the seasonal distribution and habitat use of juvenile green turtles in the Paraná coast, Brazil has been finalized. In collaboration with Dr. Camila Domit -MarBrasil and LEC-UFPR, we successfully deployed 5 satellite tags on juvenile green turtles. This was the second stage of a broader project looking at the seasonal distribution and migration of green turtles in a temperate region, where 5 other satellite tags were deployed in May 2016.
